Crispy, golden mini corn dogs with juicy cocktail sausages wrapped in a slightly sweet, fluffy cornmeal batter. They’re perfect for parties, kids’ snacks, game days, or an easy appetizer.
Ingredients
For the Corn Dogs:
1 package (12 oz / 340 g) cocktail sausages or mini hot dogs
1 cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
1 large egg
¾ cup whole milk
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 teaspoon honey
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, for dusting the sausages
For Frying:
4–6 cups vegetable, canola, or sunflower oil
For Serving:
Ketchup
Yellow mustard
Honey mustard
Barbecue sauce
Ranch dressing
Instructions
Prepare the sausages:
If using cocktail sausages, drain them well and pat them completely dry with paper towels. Removing excess moisture helps the batter stick.
Insert the sticks:
Insert a small wooden skewer or lollipop stick into each mini sausage, leaving enough of the stick exposed for easy handling.
Dust with flour:
Lightly coat the sausages with 1 tablespoon flour. Shake off any excess.
Prepare the dry ingredients:
In a medium bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, 1 cup flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
Prepare the wet ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, melted butter, and honey.
Make the batter:
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined.
The batter should be thick enough to coat the sausages. If it is too thick, add 1 tablespoon milk at a time. If too thin, add a little flour.
Heat the oil:
Pour the oil into a deep, heavy-bottomed pot, leaving plenty of space at the top.
Heat to 350°F (175°C). Use a kitchen thermometer for the most consistent results.
Coat the sausages:
Dip each floured sausage completely into the batter, gently turning it so it gets an even coating.
Allow excess batter to drip off briefly.
Fry:
Carefully place the battered mini corn dogs into the hot oil. Fry in small batches so the temperature of the oil does not drop too much.
Cook for approximately 2–3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crisp.
Drain:
Remove the mini corn dogs with tongs or a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate or wire rack.
Repeat:
Continue with the remaining sausages and batter.
Serve:
Serve hot with ketchup, mustard, honey mustard, barbecue sauce, or ranch dressing.

Q/S – Questions & Tips
Q: Can I use regular hot dogs?
S: Yes. Cut regular hot dogs into smaller pieces before battering and frying.
Q: Why won’t the batter stick to my sausages?
S: Make sure the sausages are completely dry and lightly dust them with flour before dipping them into the batter.
Q: How thick should the batter be?
S: It should be thick enough to coat the sausage without immediately sliding off. Similar to a thick pancake batter.
Q: Why are my corn dogs greasy?
S: The oil may not be hot enough. Keep the frying temperature around 350°F (175°C) and avoid overcrowding the pot.
Q: Why did the batter fall off?
S: Wet sausages, batter that is too thin, or oil that is too cool can cause the coating to separate.
Q: Can I bake mini corn dogs?
S: Yes. Place battered corn dogs on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 400°F (200°C) for about 15–20 minutes, turning once. They will be less crisp than fried corn dogs.
Q: Can I air fry them?
S: Yes. Lightly spray the battered corn dogs with oil and air fry at approximately 375°F (190°C) for 8–12 minutes, turning halfway through.
Q: Can I use cheese-filled sausages?
S: Yes. Cheese-filled mini sausages make a delicious variation, but seal them well with batter to prevent cheese from leaking during frying.
Q: Can I make the batter sweeter?
S: Yes. Add another 1 tablespoon of sugar or a little extra honey for a sweeter corn-dog-style coating.
Q: Can I make them spicy?
S: Yes. Add ¼–½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, chili powder, or smoked paprika to the batter.
Q: Can I prepare them ahead of time?
S: Yes. Fry them, let them cool completely, and refrigerate them in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Q: How do I reheat them?
S: Reheat in an air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 4–6 minutes or in a 375°F (190°C) oven for about 8–10 minutes.
Q: Can I freeze mini corn dogs?
S: Yes. Cool completely, arrange in a single layer, freeze until firm, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be frozen for up to 2 months.
Q: Can I fry them without sticks?
S: Yes. Simply dip the mini sausages in batter and carefully drop them into the oil. They will cook like bite-sized corn dogs.
Q: What sauces go best with mini corn dogs?
S: Ketchup and yellow mustard are classic choices. Honey mustard, barbecue sauce, ranch, spicy mayo, and cheese sauce are also delicious.
