The photo looks like a gooey Southern-style pecan pie bar/casserole: a buttery baked base covered with a rich caramel-like pecan filling. The large quantity of pecans on top is the main feature. Traditional versions commonly use a shortbread crust, eggs, brown sugar, butter, and corn syrup.

FULL METHOD
1. Prepare the pan
Heat oven to 350°F / 175°C.
Line a 9 × 13-inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving some paper hanging over the sides. This makes the finished bars much easier to remove.
Lightly butter or spray the parchment.
2. Prepare the pecans
For the best flavor, toast the pecans first.
Spread the pecans on a baking sheet and toast at 325–350°F (165–175°C) for about 7–10 minutes.
Watch them carefully—they can burn quickly.
Cool for a few minutes.
Use:
about 1½ cups chopped pecans inside the filling
about 1 cup pecan halves or large pieces for the beautiful topping shown in your picture.
Toasting pecans before using them is optional, but it gives substantially more flavor and crunch.

3. Make the shortbread crust
Put flour, sugar and salt in a bowl.
Add the cold cubed butter.
Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips, or use a pastry cutter, until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Do not knead it into a smooth bread-like dough.
Press the mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared dish.
Bake for approximately 18–20 minutes, until the edges are just beginning to turn golden. Similar established recipes par-bake the crust before adding the filling.

4. Make the gooey pecan filling
While the crust is baking, melt the ½ cup butter and allow it to cool slightly.
In a large bowl whisk together:
Eggs
Brown sugar
Corn syrup
Melted butter
Vanilla
Salt
Whisk until smooth.
If using cinnamon, add it now.
Do not whip the eggs excessively—you want a smooth filling rather than lots of air bubbles.
5. Add the pecans
Fold approximately 1½ cups chopped pecans into the filling.
Save the remaining pecans for the top.
6. Assemble
Take the partially baked crust from the oven.
Immediately pour the pecan filling over it.
Spread evenly.
Arrange the remaining pecan halves across the surface.
For a photo like yours, don’t arrange every pecan perfectly. A mixture of halves and pieces gives the rustic, abundant look.
7. Bake
Return the dish to the oven.
Bake at:
350°F / 175°C for approximately 30–35 minutes.
The edges should be set and the center should still have a slight jiggle.
Don’t wait until the center is completely hard in the oven. It continues cooking and firming as it cools. Established pecan-bar recipes similarly recommend baking until the filling is set/puffed and then cooling completely.

Important:
If the pecans are becoming too dark before the center is ready, loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil.
8. COOL COMPLETELY
This is very important.
Leave the pan on a cooling rack until completely cool.
For especially clean slices:
Refrigerate 1–2 hours after cooling.
Then lift the bars out using the parchment and cut into squares.
If you cut them while hot, the caramel filling can run everywhere.
What you should get
The finished bars should have:
Top: toasted, crunchy pecans
↓
Middle: sticky, buttery caramel/pecan filling
↓
Bottom: firm, buttery shortbread
That’s the characteristic pecan-pie-bar combination.

ALL ABOUT THE NUTS
Why pecans?
Pecans have a naturally buttery flavor and relatively soft crunch, which works particularly well with caramelized sugar.
For this recipe, pecan halves + chopped pecans are ideal.
Best pecan size
For the filling:
½-inch / 1–1.5 cm pieces are excellent.
For the top:
Use halves or large pieces.
Raw or roasted?
Both work.
Raw pecans:
Softer, more delicate flavor.
Toasted pecans:
Deeper, nuttier flavor and better crunch.
I recommend toasting them.
Can I use other nuts?
Yes, but the dessert will no longer have the classic pecan flavor.
Nut Result
Pecans Classic, buttery
Walnuts Slightly more bitter/earthy
Macadamias Very rich and buttery
Cashews Sweet and creamy
Almonds Firmer, crunchier
Hazelnuts Strong roasted flavor
Pistachios Different but delicious
A tested pecan-bar variation also notes that walnuts, cashews and macadamias can be substituted, although pecans give the characteristic pecan-pie flavor.
S
Supergolden Bakes
Best non-pecan combination
Try:
1½ cups pecans + ½ cup walnuts + ½ cup macadamias.
Nut allergy Q&A
Can I make this without nuts?
Yes, but it becomes more like a caramel pie bar rather than a pecan pie bar.
Replace the pecans with approximately 2½ cups of toasted pumpkin seeds (pepitas) for a crunchy nut-free alternative.
However, do not serve this to someone with a severe tree-nut allergy unless every ingredient, utensil, pan and preparation surface is confirmed free from cross-contact.
Also check packaged ingredients such as chocolate, flour and syrups for allergy statements.
Are pecans a tree nut?
Yes. Pecans are tree nuts.
Someone allergic to tree nuts should not assume that pecans are safe.
🇵🇰 Ingredient substitutions
If you’re making this in Pakistan:
Corn syrup
You can usually find imported light corn syrup, but if unavailable, golden syrup is a practical alternative.
It will give the filling a somewhat deeper caramel flavor.
Brown sugar
Use:
1 cup packed brown sugar
If you don’t have commercial brown sugar:
Mix approximately:
1 cup white sugar
1 tbsp molasses
Unsalted butter
Regular salted butter can be used.
If using salted butter, reduce the added salt slightly.
Vanilla
Vanilla extract is best, but vanilla essence can work.
Use a little less if the essence is particularly strong.
Delicious variations
Chocolate pecan bars
Add ½–1 cup chocolate chips to the filling.
Dark chocolate is especially good.
Salted caramel pecan bars
After baking, sprinkle the top lightly with flaky sea salt.
The salty-sweet combination is excellent.
Maple pecan bars
Replace part of the corn syrup with pure maple syrup.
For example:
½ cup corn syrup
½ cup maple syrup
Cinnamon pecan bars
Add:
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp nutmeg
Bourbon pecan bars
Add 1–2 tbsp bourbon to the filling.
Do not add excessive liquid or the filling may not set properly.
How to get clean pieces
For bakery-style squares:
Cool completely.
Refrigerate until firm.
Lift out using parchment.
Use a large sharp knife.
Wipe the knife after each cut.
Cut into 24 smaller bars.
For a richer dessert, make 16 larger squares.
Storage Q&A
How long do they last?
Keep covered in the refrigerator for approximately 3–4 days. Similar published pecan-bar recipes recommend refrigerated storage for several days.

Can I freeze them?
Yes.
Cut into bars, wrap well and place in a freezer-safe container.
Freeze for approximately 2–3 months for best quality.

How do I thaw them?
Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
Bring to room temperature before serving if you prefer a softer filling.
Troubleshooting Q&A
Why is my filling runny?
Most commonly:
It hasn’t cooled enough.
It was underbaked.
The filling had too much liquid.
The bars were cut while hot.
Solution: Refrigerate them before cutting. If they’re still genuinely liquid after cooling, they were probably underbaked.
Why is the top too hard?
It was probably baked too long or at too high a temperature.
The filling should be set but still soft, not completely dry.
Why did my pecans burn?
Pecans contain a lot of natural fat and can brown quickly.
If the nuts are darkening too rapidly, cover the pan loosely with foil during the final portion of baking.
Why is the crust soggy?
The filling can make the crust softer if the crust isn’t sufficiently par-baked.
Bake the crust until it has begun to turn lightly golden before adding the filling.
Why did the bars fall apart?
They were probably cut while warm.
Cool completely first, preferably chill them, then cut.
Why is my filling grainy?
Sugar crystallization or overcooking can contribute.
Avoid vigorously boiling the egg-containing filling and don’t overbake it.
My recommended version for the photo
For the closest rustic, extra-pecan appearance to your picture, I’d use:
1½ cups flour
½ cup sugar
¾ cup butter
½ tsp salt
4 eggs
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup corn/golden syrup
½ cup butter
1 tsp vanilla
½ tsp salt
2½ cups pecans
1 tsp cinnamon
Toast the pecans first, put about 1½ cups into the filling, then cover the top with the remaining 1 cup of pecan halves.
